Cooking or Baking??

I don’t know about you but I absolutely hate cooking. I started cooking when I was about 9 or 10 for our family. I wasn’t very good at it and of course got heaps of criticism at times for it too. I really did hate it BUT had to do it. It was one of our chores when we were growing up. It helped out in the house especially when Mum & Dad were at work. My sister taught me everything I know…she is an awesome cook and I owe her quite a bit to be honest. We used to work together on the cooking – not sure if it was all good but in my memory, we stuck together on most of it.

The downside of all this sucks really as I love food so you I have to cook. Hubby and I used to go out a bit in the early days as neither of us liked cooking but now its turned full circle. You know, we had to cook as kids and now as an adult, I am in the same spot. When you have children, you need to cook to support them and here I am 30 odd years later thinking……..what the heck?? Here I am again in this god awful spot of cooking when I hate it, but I need to. Lucky for me, I’m in the position now where I am currently teaching both my children to cook and honestly, they’re quick learners.

We started small with toast and tea….may as well make most of this while I can!! I get my breakfast made quite often these days and they are well trained on making a cup of tea (its not as easy as you think). We then moved to using the microwave and warmed spaghetti to add to the toast. Nowadays we have moved along and we can make pizza, noodles, pasta, spaghetti Bolognese and we are currently learning how to make butter chicken. This was yummy!! Leftovers for lunch at some point.

To balance my dislike of cooking meals, I have found something that I do enjoy – BAKING. Now I know I have talked about my love of food which is one reason why I cook but I absolutely love to bake. I don’t know why but I love it. Over the years when I worked as a nanny, I always baked for and with the kids. I can be perfectly honest here and say I am not the most wonderful baker but I do LOVE this part of cooking.

There are so many different recipes around but my favourite ones are loaves or slices these days. I also have my trusty Edmonds Cook Book which was given to me when arrived in NZ. Its a bit tatty nowadays but its my go to for all my recipes. Now,I do make biscuits often but not as much as a good old fashioned cake. Maybe I love cakes and stuff because both my grannies used to bake. I don’t remember doing much of that when we were kids. That could be the reason for my rationale.

Anyways, I was just doing some baking today (banana loaf) and all this stuff was going through my head so I thought I would write it down and share it with you. I do think about this kinda stuff a lot and quite frankly, we have to do stuff we don’t want to do everyday. Some days it could just be hard getting out of bed, or dealing with a bunch numpties (just think bananas) or maybe you just aren’t feeling good. When I get in that mood like I did today, then I bake, because food always makes me feel better LOL.

The other thing I think about is the joy baking brings to life whether its your life or someone else. There is nothing like home baking to make your day. Recently, the Karate Kid turned 10 (I know double digits) and so the deal is that they get to choose the cake they want. Nan is usually the baker of the birthday cakes (she loves doing it) and so we left this one in her hands. He chose chocolate cake (he is a chocolate monster) but I am going to leave this here because I think we can all relate to baking. Its just perfect and there is nothing more perfect that a birthday and a home made birthday cake (watch this space for the birthday present saga).

Cool as a Cucumber


You may snub it and make faces at it but seriously- I love it!! I just didn’t realize how COOL a fruit (yes a fruit) it is. Check this out

1. Cucumber contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

Itchy and Scratchy!!

Gosh have you ever experienced the nit thing as a parent?? OMG – it’s like your worst nightmare!! Even now, I am itching my head as I type.

Nothing like little critters in your little munchkins hair to make your day- NOT.

Here’s a little Info about nits. The biggest issue we face as parents is getting rid of them and keeping them away.

Guess what?? I wanted to share my little secret to getting rid of the itchy’s. My kids were ALWAYS getting bugs in their hair until my wonderful hairdresser introduced me to this amazing stuff called Nit-Enz. This stuff is the BEST. We use the shampoo and spray.

This shampoo works so well that we haven’t had them since!! We’ve been clear for 3 years (sounds like an ad for AA).

What I love about it is it’s natural and so we use the shampoo every couple of weeks, just make sure. It may seem silly but hey I would rather do that than buy treatments that don’t work!!

There is also a spray- works well as a de tangled too.

I can sit here and give you the spiel or you could just try it yourself. They are pretty prompt with postage and send you information on how to use it too!! Here is the link to their website – Nit-Enz

Just Incase you don’t believe me – it’s our go to product!! We only use one or two bottles a year- way less expensive than regular treatments. I haven’t found anyone who hasn’t had success!!

Intermittent Fasting – FAD or Not?

Have you tried it? Have you heard of it even? I have heard of people doing a fasting thing and thought they were a bunch of monkeys. I am not kicking back at folks who do fast, I just can’t believe its a thing.

Fasting! Are you kidding me.

Anyway I keep hearing it as I am in so many groups on FB that its not funny. I have fitness groups, health groups, teaching groups, parenting groups, learning groups and what not. I have now joined a few more groups to do with healthier lifestyles.

This is because my current focus is on making me feel better about myself. I have been doing quite a bit of fitness and in these groups this fasting thing keeps coming up. Some folks say they are achieving stronger results because they are fasting. Then this other thing pops up – get this – some people are fasting while they are working out. Now that blew me away because when I work out – I can be truly serious and tell you that i am absolutely famished at the end of my work out. I don’t hit the junk side of the pantry but I do make heaps of eggs and stuff so i feel like I am being healthy.

The more I have seen about this fasting lark, the more intrigued I have become. Sooooo, you got it!! I went a searching to see what all the fuss was about. I just googled IF or fasting and a few different things popped up. I had a fair good read and I quite liked some of the ideas probably because I don’t like diets as such but this is slightly different.

What I got out of this was that fasting is an eating cycle that breaks up into periods of eating and periods of fasting. It seems as though its meant to teach your body to use up fat stores rather than create more. Anyways I decided that I would give it a try. Its seems as though I was eating waayyy too much and probably at all the wrong times. There is only so much fitness I could do and I am trying to shed a little weight. I know that I need to retrain my body to consume food when it needs it and not just because I opened the pantry door.

I did a bit more googling and reading. I found a few weblinks that connected to what would work best for me to try as a beginner who loves food. I found a few app’s but This is the one I like. I clicked in there, answered some basic questions about me and voilla!

I downloaded the bodyfast app onto my phone and I read up on a few things that popped up to help me on my journey. When you start, you just answer a few questions and voila!! It gives you different options to choose from and recommends the best fasting options based on the information you provide.

I chose to do the 16/8 fast which is 16 hours of fasting (heaven forbid) and an 8 hour window for eating. I wasn’t really sure how this was going to go and what I could eat or what I couldn’t but soon worked it out because I over think EVERYTHING. It’s not that hard.

Now, I haven’t been doing this long so I am not expert. I can only share my story and honestly, I really did research heaps particularly through FB. I had a look on my FB groups (those fasting comments) and followed a few threads. I found a couple of cool links on IG which have given me clues on eating. I have pics of one below!!

So, I have scheduled my eating to start at midday and end at 8 pm. This would give me good times to eat well and still be able to make meals without fainting (insert eye roll) when cooking for the kids or hubby.

The first day was obviously the hardest because my natural reaction when I get up in the morning, as I have done for the past 40 years is to eat breakfast. But in my wisdom and glory, I have decided not to have breakfast. My reasoning was simple, I could probably make it through the morning without food but would need a good dinner in me so breakie went!!

That first morning, I made myself a black tea – this is something that well let’s be honest- it was horrible. Anyways, I went about my morning. I can tell you that it worked ok because I kept myself busy and I wasn’t checking the clock all the time. When it came to fast ending time – I got the ding on my phone to say “eat like a pig”. 🤣🤣 No seriously, it just tells you that your fast is over and you are in your eating window. It was choosing what to eat at that time which was hard. I started with a cup of tea of course!!

Its actually quite cool this little app. It just sorta makes sense. Now as the first week went on, I actually could feel myself getting hungry at times but I just skulled some water and told myself I really wasn’t hungry. It worked. There have been a couple of days that I actually popped some food in my greedy chops and realised that I was still fasting and quickly spat it out (golly gee). You should have seen the kids faces- I only do that with mushrooms usually 😂😂 And lots of explaining afterwards!!

Anyways its been a couple of weeks now and I can tell you that there is some difference!! Only problem with weight loss is that the area you want to keep goes first!

Happily, I am down 2.5 kg and my waist line is shrinking (along with the boobs). I am actually enjoying this. I feel better about myself now. I know it’s really weird. My clothes are starting to fit better too which is always a bonus!

On the eating side of things, I can tell you that I am not as hungry as I once used to be.

Here’s the thing. When I am on my eating part, I am actually eating really well. I am tracking my food intake through my fitbit and have noticed that I eat a LOT more good foods, drink less tea and consume more water. I don’t feel like I need bread. I do listen to my body and follow my cravings. I feel like my body is neater, if that makes sense. I am choosing to eat better and here is the clincher. I was at MacDonalds the other day and I love a cheeseburger and fries but crikey dick, I couldn’t eat the whole lot. I was actually full.

This plan is helping me to nip my nasty habbits in the bud. I reckon I am now one of those monkeys and I will keep it up for a bit longer and see where I go from there. Perhaps I need to visit the google library for more titbits on when to slow down and give myself a where to next.

I am now on the other end of this fasting thing where people are looking at me thinking I am right twat for fasting when there is perfectly good food around me BIT I think I have found the right program for me. I just need to change it up!!

Friends are Like Knickersi

Friends are like knickers!! Who would have thought!! Well, I thought I would bring some short magic to you today!! Let’s be honest, with this subject, I can’t tell you anything that you don’t already know.

Friends ARE like knickers and Knickers are like friends. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some aren’t around you all the time. You have good Knickers and everyday knickers. You have the ones that you rely on- you know the old favourites and we even have some for different occasions!! (Wink wink, Nod Nod).

But this just nails it for me!

I have friends ALL over the world!! I don’t see them all the time anymore but I remember the memories we shared, the places we went to and the mischief we got up to!!

Some friends are with us for a moment in time but the memories last a life time!! Thank you friends for being there for me (and knickers- thank you too)!!

If you need inspiration she has a wall calendar to help you!! We have two of her calendars. We won Thirty One Days of Kindness which I completed with my kids. It was really inspirational and sharing this with my kids really cemented the goodness in.

These are fabulous little reminders and make good gifts too!! I am actually purchasing these as Christmas gifts for different friends this year. I am also planning on starting the kindness process in Class. I think it would be a great literacy tool for the kids!!

Finish What You Start

So I saw this meme (I see alot of this daily). This one was pretty good and it made me laugh. I figured you might enjoy it too!!

Did it make you think of the bottle of wine in the fridge? Or the chocolate block hiding on the shelf in the cupboard? Perhaps even the yummy biscuits in the pantry? I reckon.

But in all honesty, I also looked at the few jobs that I haven’t finished like the little bit of sewing, the ironing bundle and the deck that needs staining (which will need to wait until the sun is shining again) and even the ever scary filing of paperwork.

Yep, I am quite guilty of just not making it to the end of the line. Its not that I don’t want to finish, its just that it seems like a great idea to start, so off I go with a hiss and a roar but soon enough I run out of steam or enthusiasm for it. Then I see that meme and it reminds to do a bit of a catch up and get finished. So I have made a list. Yes, I made another list but at least this one doesn’t need to leave home with me. Right now its quite long so I secretly wish it would leave home by itself. Well maybe the fairies could pop in to complete all these tasks.

Then I remember that I am the fairy!! I reckon I need to start sprinkling my magic everywhere by making a dent on those icky jobs. They could wait till tomorrow but then….. there are only so many tomorrows.

My positive in all this is that instead of waiting till Monday or starting tomorrow as I always tell myself. I decided to start yesterday. I figured that would be as good a day as any and so far I have done really well. That list is slowly disappearing and there isn’t anything new landing on it either. Poof!! Just like that!! So let me help you find your inner fairy and get tackling those icky jobs yesterday!! Its super cool. At least you can say you did that yesterday!!

Uber Rated

Do you find yourself acting as the resident uber driver in your house?? Funny, me too!! When hubby and I had Miss Highland Dancer, we took her to playgroups, music classes and swimming lessons. She came to work with me at the childcare centre where I worked. We often walked everywhere because we live in town so it was easy. When Karate Kid came along, the same thing applied although I had extra luggage and sometimes the walk just too long so we would end up driving 2 minutes down the road – just for ease. My ease.

As the years have travelled by, what used to be really cool fun times has ended up looking alot like Driving Miss Daisy. We or me, yes I spend countless times in the day running around to karate, dancing, swiming, soccer, rugby, miniball and sleepovers. Sometimes I feel like this is quite sudden but its really not. I actually set that tone myself through the early years so I really shouldn’t winge and whine about it. And honestly, I don’t usually. I just try to schedule in my time and a wine around the “can u pick me up from skool, cos am zzzz’d? Ty” or “can u tak me 2 library n u can pick me up from there? Ty”. We can talk about the text speak another time!! The best uber quote is – can u drop me off here, pick up so and so, then go pick up someone else to drop off somewhere else!! Jeepers creepers!!

This uber thing is definately over rated. I can’t wait for the days when they can uber me around. For now I get to enjoy some cheeky stories, stinky farts (lots of those) and some really funny moments when they fall out the car or try to get in someone else’s. Classic!!!

As parents, I know we gripe and moan about stuff all the time but even though I am a glorified taxi driver for now, I see that as my kids still need me. Being there for them is the most important thing & keeping them safe. Just in case you wonder how I make my uber positive work……. I only charge hugs. Take it from me as they get bigger, the hugs become less so I take them where I can!! UBER it is!!!

“All it took was a smile”

Quite a few many years ago, I made a new friend. How we became friends is the story. We used to travel on the same bus (after a tube ride). She never smiled. A week on the same bus and she never once smiled. I mean never. She would stare out the window or just look at people. I used to wonder what her story was.

I decided that I could make her smile. So one morning, I sat opposite her on the bus and I just smiled when she looked at me. I swear I thought I had pissed her off because she gave me the death stare. it was scary but I really hoped I could break a smile. It really couldn’t be that bad!! So everyday for a WHOLE freaking week I sat near her, beside her or opposite her and I always caught her eye. When I did, I smiled.

Then on the Friday we were sitting opposite each other and she smiled back. I wasn’t expecting it, if I’m honest, but then she leaned forward and asked me why I smiled at her everyday.

My answer was simple- I figured she just needed to see something good.

The next Monday, she was on the bus. I sat down near her and when I looked at her- SHE smiled at me.

That was the day that made me smile!!

Over time, we slowly became friends. As we became closer she told me that she wanted to do something new, something good so she finally decided to enroll-at uni. Four years later, she invited me to her graduation, She asked me attend because she said I was her inspiration & she needed me there for support. She had been asked to give a speech on behalf of the graduating students.

She stepped up to the podium and began……

“All it took was a smile.”

Four years ago I was on a different path and well let’s just say I wasn’t in a good place. My hours at work had not long changed, I was was working longer days. I had to change a few things one of those things my bus journey. I had to take a different bus. I had been traveling this bus for about a week. It want a special bus, just the usual London bus. This one morning – well it was a bad day. I found out my boyfriend was cheating on me and I was sad, really sad. I was on the bus when this woman hopped on. I’d seen her before but that day she smiled at me.

I don’t know why she was smiling, life couldn’t be that good. But she just kept smiling at me. I wished she would stop it but she didn’t. I stared at her – willing her to stop smiling because really what was there to smile about?

Everyday I got on that bus, I tried not to look at her because when I did, she would smile. So I would look out the window or at everyone but her and I even sat in different seats to make it harder. For a whole week she smiled at me. Oh My Goodness. She just wouldn’t give up.

Anyway, by the end the week, I had my mind made up. This was it. When she got on the bus and sat opposite me – I thought why the heck not. It’s not going to change anything. So I smiled back. I don’t know why I did it. I just smiled at her.

Do you know it actually felt good. I felt good. I couldn’t help it, I just kept smiling. To this day, I can’t explain it but I felt free for some reason. When I asked her why she smiled at me. She said, I figured you needed to see something good.

She was right. When she sat down that day, I knew what I was going to to do. I had recently found out my boyfriend was cheating on me with my best friend. I was in a job with an abusive boss. My days were terrible. I wasn’t sleeping or eating.

I was ready to give up. I had it all prepared. The letter was written, I had the pills and I was going to work today to tell my boss to shove it!!

When she smiled at me that day, I thought why not because I knew that this was it. I wouldn’t be here on Monday. It won’t matter so I smiled back. It was weird though. It wasn’t supposed to feel good because things were so wrong. I don’t know what happened but I felt something else. Something had changed.

Here’s the thing – I didn’t do what I had planned at all. I didn’t know what I was going to do. But on Monday I got back on that bus and when she looked at me, I smiled at her.

I realized later that she gave me hope and she is the reason I am standing here today.

Sometimes it just takes one little thing to change everything. For me it was a smile and for the last four years I have smiled at ONE person everyday.

Today I’m smiling at you because all it took was a smile.”

To Teach or not to Teach

There is a lot of communication and visibility in the media right now about teacher strikes, conditions, classroom support and pay rises. It’s not all sunshine and roses so I wanted to share a little something from my teaching experience.

I love teaching. I love that I am able to teach somebody something new today. Maybe a child learnt about keeping themselves safe or perhaps they learnt what a verb is. This job is full of surprises.

Being a teacher is a bit more ‘hands on’ than people think. Our days are busy with big ideas and plans on how to help kids understand a simple concept. BUT, we also become the nurse when kids are sick, the empath when things are not right, the mind reader when trying to work out a solution to a problem you never knew existed and clairvoyant too- just because sometimes you need to be a forward thinker.

On top of that you plan lessons based on each child and their needs, how they learn, what makes them tick, what they love and where they might need support. We make positives out of everything.  Everyone becomes a champion at something when they are at school. You chat with parents, talk with other teachers to pick up ideas or strategies for your classroom. You try to make every lesson fun even though some of them are not your forte. It’s like trying to make a Brussel sprout a lot more interesting and delicious to eat. Sometimes – it takes a wee bit more sauce!!

We teach kids how to be resilient by setting challenges in class. They problem solve, collaborate, share, take turns, challenge themselves and strive for excellence- most of the time. We even give them strategies on how to work with the kid that gets you into trouble just for looking at them.

We believe in these children and know what they can do. We see them grow and develop everyday in class yet there are times when well – this says it all!!

Yep, some days are tougher than others. Some days you argue with the photocopier and other days you feel like you’re on repeat saying the same thing over and over.

At the end of it all- we are there for the children. Teaching (primary, ECE or secondary) is similar to parenting because so much happens in the background -(a lot of planning, thinking and reasoning) that no one sees.

But it’s not all about the glory or a pay check. Sometimes it’s the little things. For me, I want to be the teacher who has the chance to make a difference to one person. Just ONE person!

When I was at school, I had a teacher in primary school, Miss Ferguson. She was lovely, friendly, took the time to work with me, understood how I worked things out and gave me support when I needed it. I want kids in my class to have the same chance that I did. I may not be Miss Ferguson (although I hope I am)  but I want the children to have the same chancesThat I had when I was in her class.

Parents, thank you for sending your children to me. You help me find that something good everyday even though their ears may be painted on some days or they ask you to repeat everything you just said.  But its that ONE moment of awesomeness each day which keeps me going!!

Funniest moment today was when they were practically dancing in my face because they know the answer!!

Well I think I will sign out for today ………. oh wait!!  I just remembered, there was a meme I saw recently on Instagram and it went something like this……….

Architects make houses. Painters make paintings. Engineers make bridges but teachers make them all.

I know there are strikes happening for alll sorts of reasons but PLEASE be patient with us, just as we are patient with your child.  Remember that we are here to support you, your child and our future and the outcome of these strikes will be another step forward in giving your child the best they can get!!   We teachers are thinking about what the children need  daily so help us give it to them.
